Yellowfin Tuna fishing has been excellent out of Oregon Inlet and the Outer Banks. Tenacity and Waste Knot both hit the docks with great catches and limits of Yellowfin Tuna on Wednesday as did a lot of private boats. The skippers at Pirates Cove are fueled up and ready to go, so if you want to get in on the action, give them a call at 252-473-3906, or visit online at www.fishpiratescove.com.
Bluefin tuna are still patrolling the Gulf Stream as well. And the Mahi run kicks off soon.
Good news for surf fishermen. The sea mullet were eating cut mullet for bait at Ramp 55 and they’re headed north. The
the water temp on Thursday was 48 degrees.
Freshwater
Things are starting to happen in freshwater as well. Yellow perch are biting on the Rappahannock and Mattaponi rivers. Medium minnows have been best baits, notes Stan Cobb at Greentop. Largemouth bass fishing has been good on the Rapp, along with a good crappie bite. The Chick has been a little off for bass lately, though 21-pounds won a recent tournament. The lower James has been good for bass and crappie, especially in the pits. The upper James has been very good overall, with a few days of tough conditions. The hot bite for smallmouth has been crankbaits, jerkbaits and small jigs. Bob Toler of Ashland went out for a few hours on Sunday, and hooked up with smallies going 4-6, 3-3 and 2-8. Bass at Lake Anna have been biting well. Quite a few big fish have been weighed in over the last 2 weeks. A-rigs, jerkbaits, swimbaits, and jigs, have been excellent. Crappie at Anna have really turned on. Some are moving into the creeks, while loads are still being caught from the bridges. Look for the creeks with an abundance of small bait. The stripers are turning on also. On some days, they can be found within a foot of the bank, in the upper sections. Lake Gaston is turning out some good catches of both largemouth and spotted bass.
