Mitchell and David Plants with Uncle Raymond
Says Capt. Reese Stecher: “We got lucky this week. The weather cooperated and we were able to get after the stripers every day. They did not disappoint.”
With the current weather pattern, Capt. Stecher says the fish are not going anywhere for a while.
Mitchell and David Plantz, from Charlottesville along with their Uncle Raymond, from Kitty Hawk scored with a limit fat stripers .
“They had the heaviest catch of the week,” Reese said. “ The Studs were biting for them on Friday morning. Yesterday afternoon we could hardly keep a bait in the water. They were chewing. It could not have been better, I am wide open for bookings and I would rather fish, than sell driftwood,” Reese says. Contact him at www.beachbumfishing.com to book a trip.
Sounds like a road trip to Nags Head is in order!
Elsewhere at Nags Head, not many were fishing the piers, but a few bluefish and a keeper trout were hauled in
Off shore, one boat sailed Wednesday and slammed the blackfin tuna and gaffed a nice 42-pound wahoo, as well.
Hatteras Surf
On Tuesday, Outer Banks surf fishermen had the “best ever” mullet fishing. Everybody caught fish with many citations. Several big drum were wrestled ashore, as well.
On Wednesday, it was more of the same with sea mullet, keeper pups, some specks and lots of big sharks caught on The Point.
Hatteras Offshore
The weather was absolutely gorgeous on Wednesday with temperatures in the low 70’s and winds from the south. Several offshore boats went commercial fishing for King Mackerel.
Last weekend, inshore anglers caught and released lots of puppy drum. Offshore, the blackfin tuna bite was fair, along with good catches of bottom fish, mostly sea bass and triggerfish.
Potomac River Techniques
By Capt. Steve Chaconas
Time to Line Up
All techniques now require a deeper and slower presentation. Light bites and long distance hook-sets are more successful with the right line.
Silver Buddy fishing is best with straight 10-pound test Edge on bait casting gear like the faster Quantum Smoke. Working this blade bait slowly with short burps, fish will take it on the drop. A faster reel and line with less stretch allows for better and quicker hook-sets. In addition, the slight tick is easier to feel with fluorocarbon line. Look for areas with steep drops in out-of-the-current areas.
In warmer areas, use Lucky Craft suspending Pointer 78 jerkbaits on spinning or casting gear and 10-pound Edge line. Long casts work best in clear water for cold bass.
Gamma Edge fluorocarbon line is the best choice for all spinning reel techniques. It sinks, is more sensitive and has lower stretch than monofilament lines. Combine 6-pound fluorocarbon as a leader with 15 pound braided line and all techniques are more effective.
Mann’s 3-inch avocado Stingray grubs on 1/4-ounce ball heads jigs can be worked with a slight lift to allow the bait to glide horizontally. With the braid/combo, the bait glides better; bites are felt, and hook-sets sure.
Same line for Mizmo tubes with a 1/4-ounce insert head. This also will glide with a slight lift. Another tip for these presentations is a faster spinning reel like the Quantum Smoke Speed Freak to take up slack to set the hook at the end of a long cast, and deeper presentations.
Chickahominy Lake Crappie
Cooling water didn’t hurt the crappie fishing on the Chickahominy Lake. In fact, it heated things up.
Tom Porter had 25 crappie, 3 white perch, 1 blue cat and 6 bass. Fishing with Capt. Conway, Karen Anderson had 9 crappie, 1 white perch, 1 blue cat, and 1 bass.
