It may be cold outside, but the bass fishing has been hot, hot, hot at Lake Anna.
Recently, winning bags (5 fish) have weighed 22, 28 and 23 pounds. The big fish went 7-0, caught out of Sturgeon Creek. The clear water near the 208 Bridge has been very productive. Some hybrid stripers are also being landed at Anna.
At Buggs Island, bass’n has been good in Nutbush because of clear water. Stripers and crappie are beginning to turn on.
Yellow perch action should begin soon as the new moon on Feb. 10 should kick off that bite on many tidal rivers.
Big smallmouth are typically landed in February on the upper James. They are there and they will bite. They just need fishermen to cooperate.
Trout fishing is good across Virginia as creeks and rivers are in ideal condition.
Sea Bass Update
By Dr. Ken Neill
We ran out for sea bass during this, the special February season. It was just like the good old days. Fish were abundant and large. We had a 4-person limit by 8:30 AM and made it home by lunchtime. We also caught some bluefish. The head boat got there not long after we did. As we headed in with our catch, we passed through a small fleet of boats headed to the wreck. I think everyone caught all the sea bass they wanted. We did briefly stop on a couple of wrecks on the way in to try for tautog. No tautog, just some small sea bass, but we did not try long. It was a gorgeous half February day on the water.
