All you need to know about fishing in and around Nags Head on the Outer Banks is the name of this web site – BeachBumFishing.com. This is the contact information for Capt. Reese Stecher, the best skipper on the Outer Banks.
I have been fishing with Reese for over 20 years. Aboard The Beach Bum, I have wrestled cobia to 80 pounds, stripers in the 30 pound class, speckled trout, puppy drum, flounder, bluefish and other species. Reese knows where they are, what they bite and how to put his clients on fish.
The best thing about fishing with the Beach Bum is his versatility. If the stripers aren’t biting, the trout will be. And bad weather is not as much of a factor.
If you plan an offshore excursion for tuna, for example, there is about a one in three chance you’ll get blown out. But by fishing nearshore and in-shore, Reese has the ability to dodge the winds for the most part.
His specialty is light tackle fishing where the fisherman catches the fish, not the boat. Casting and hooking up with a big red drum on light tackle is about all you can handle – and fun!
Looking ahead, this is what you can expect to catch with Beach Bum Fishing.
It all starts right now, as the water temperatures in the sound and Ocean hit 50 degrees. This is when it happens for stripers. For the next two months, Reese will be into stripers back in the sound. In recent seasons, the size of these fish has increased, some up to 10 pounds. He also fishes the ocean for 30 and 40 pounders when they move beneath the Oregon Inlet Bridge.
In May, many anglers are looking for cobia. They began their run to the north about this time and continue through June – big fellows at up to 80- pounds and more. Black tip sharks are also a possibility – tremendous fighters.
Also starting in April, speckled trout and puppy drum are readily available – so take your choice, or maybe try for all of them.
The speckled trout fishing, says Reese, has been the best ever in the last year or two. Reese has found them on almost every trip – beautiful fish to 10 pounds. This fishery extends all the way through the fall. Even in November and December, Capt. Stecher can put his clients on a combo package of trout, drum and stripers.
Reese does half day trips and full day trips and for larger parties, he has other skilled captains at his disposal.
