Nancy wanted some Mountain Mint, to plant next to our goldfish/frog pond. The aromatic plant is valued because of its ability to attract butterflies, bees, wasps, and flies. Her pond advisor suggested the plants would provide cover for our frogs and a source of food. So, off I went in search of Pycnanthemum, better known as Mountain Mint. No one in town had any, but my favorite nursery in Ruckersville, Corner Store Garden Store, did. I called and they put aside two plants for me. My frogs will be happy.
Mountain Mint is, naturally, a member of the mint family. It grows wild along the edges of woodlands. It can survive in soil that receives about a half-day of sunshine. The soil needn’t be rich but should be kept slightly moist during the first part of summer. Once established, the plants are very drought and heat resistant. The plants are also quite attractive as they develop white or pink pigments in the leaves that frame the flower clusters. Another bonus – deer won’t eat them. They attract pollinators and discourage the deer. That’s a hard combination to beat.
I always enjoy my trips to Corner Store because they almost always have what I need along with plenty of advice. They are also friendly – always friendly, not just some of the time. They have been as busy as one-armed paper hangers this spring as people flock to their store for seeds, plants, and advice. If you need something out of the ordinary, or if you need expert gardening advice, check them out. Call 434-985-7818 or pay a visit. Corner Store Garden Center is located beside Sheets on 29 North, about 10 miles north of town.
