Going into last winter, we had three frogs. A bullfrog and two leopard frogs. Then, they sank out of sight, or else scurried beneath a pile of rocks until their body switch came back on. Being cold-blooded, frogs shut their systems down to practically nothing, so they can ride out freezing weather until the spring thaw.
This spring, we have all the three frogs back from last year, plus a new arrival. Another leopard frog.
Where these leopard frogs come from, I have no idea. We stocked the bullfrog as a tadpole. I know where he came from, but the others just showed up. If we lived near a lake, or a river or even a sizeable creek, I could understand. But we don’t and the frogs just show up.
In the summer, when it pours the rain, you’ll often see frogs in the road, travelling, I suppose. I guess that’s how they move around – on rainy nights. Then, they can somehow sense where water, like a goldfish pond may be, and they settle in, and I’m glad they do.
I love frogs.
