My resident bull frog, Billy Bull, has quite an appetite, but he may have bitten off more than he can chew. This week, he tried to eat bird.
Nancy was in the back year putzing around and saw a small house finch land on a rock in our goldfish pod to get a sip of water. Unfortunately, the little finch landed on a rock next to out resident bullfrog, Billy Bull. Bill Bull immediately lunged at what he thought a gourmet meal and grabbed the startled fowl by the wing. The finch was quite distressed and fluttered and carried on, finally escaping the clamp-like jaws of our young bull frog. The bird was unharmed and flew away, probably thinking I don’t need any water for the rest of my life.
In the meantime, Billy used one of his front flippers to wipe the feathers out of his mouth. Amazingly, he’s not yet a full-grown frog. I guess him to be about 5-inches from the tip of his nose to his rump and maybe 9-inches long with legs extended. Who knows, if he grows larger, he might go for a goose.
I’ve had plenty of bird dogs in my life, but this is my first bird frog. Nature is truly amazing.
