I have stumbled across a neat product in the grocery store. It may have been around for a while, but I hadn’t noticed until a couple weeks ago. It is Beef Shaved Steak from a company called Old Neighborhood. The reason it caught my eye is that I just did an article on making Philly Cheese Steaks with SteakUms, a frozen meat product. The Old Neighborhood meat is boxed and shipped frozen, but the store had thawed the meat before putting it on display. The product is extremely versatile and reasonable priced.
Old Neighborhood Foods has been around awhile, since 1914, in fact. In addition to the shaved steak, they have shaved chicken and shaved pork, all great for stir fries and tacos.
My first experiment with the shaved beef was for a Philly Cheese Steak sandwich. It was very good. Then, I tried the super thinly sliced meat as the star of a Steak Burrito recipe and it was again spot on.
Old Neighborhood Shaved Beef Steak comes in one-pound trays and costs about $7. I asked the butcher at Kroger’s what kind of steak it was and he said it was probably a variety. But, you know, if you slice even a normally tough round steak thinly enough, it’s tender, and tasty. Whatever meat it is, it tastes like steak, it’s tender and juicy. The fat content is about 10%, just enough to add flavor.
Here is my very simple and easy recipe for a super good Steak Burrito
Steak Burritos
(makes 6)
1 lb. Package of Old Neighborhood Shaved Beef Steak
1 Pkg. mild taco seasoning
2 C. chunky salsa
8 oz. shredded Mexican cheese
6 soft tortillas
Fry the steak quickly in a large frying pan sprayed with Pam. Add salt and pepper while frying. Remove the steak when just done. Mix a packet of taco seasoning mix in 1 cup of warm water and stir thoroughly. Add 2 cups of chucky salsa and the taco/water mixture to the pan and boil for about a minute. Put the steak back in the pan with the sauces and cook another 5 minutes. Divide the steak into 6 portions and distribute on the tortillas. Add cheese to each burrito and bake in a 350 oven for ten minutes. Add jalapeno peppers, guacamole, sour cream and other ingredients as condiments, but these Steak Burritos are good just the way they are.
