Sunday is often the night to chill out at the Brewer house. Many times we have entertained or have been entertained over the weekend and we want a simple, Sunday night meal. For Nancy and I, Sunday is a great night for pizza. But that presents a problem. Both of us are watching our weight and pizza is not a very accommodating dish when it comes to shedding calories. The opposite is true because it’s hard not to eat that extra slice or two when something tastes so good. We generally order thin crusts or buy thin crust pizza crusts to bake ourselves, but they can still add on pounds.
Last Sunday afternoon we were in World Market shopping for a few gifts when I saw a display of Pastorelli Pizza Crusts and sauces. I didn’t want a big meal that evening because we had just feasted on a Thanksgiving style mid-day dinner with a friend. But I needed something to eat so I bought a 5-pack of the smaller, 8-inch pizza crusts that were advertised as Ultra Thin. They contained olive oil and were advertised as full of fiber. Each of the small crusts was 150 calories, not bad. That night, I dressed the crusts with tomato sauce, sprinkled on some skim milk Mozzarella cheese and topped them off with pepperoni slices.
I popped three small pizzas in a 400-degree oven for 10 minutes and they were scrumptious. Even though the crust was truly ultra thin, it held the toppings just as well as a much thicker crust and the crusts themselves were crispy and delicious. I ate two of the small pizzas and Nancy, after vowing she wouldn’t eat anything, finished off the third one. The good news? Both of us lost weight the next morning.
I’m not a nutritionist but I believe the extra fiber in Pastorelli crusts helps offset the calories. Try a pack of Pastorelli crusts next time you run across one of their displays. Add your favorite toppings, enjoy a pizza pie and lose weight at the same time.
