I cannot sharpen a knife.
If I ever need a really sharp knife, I’ll go out buy a new one. New knives are sharp right out of the box, but I have never been able to put a keen edge on an old knife.
Daddy could.
About once a month, he’d get out an old whetstone with three sides and methodically sharpen every knife in the kitchen. More than once, I cut myself just opening the knife drawer. His knives were razor sharp.
But not me. As a knife sharpener, I am a lost cause. I have a little hand held sharpener with a vee on the end and if I drag it across a blade a dozen times, it’ll cut butter if it’s warm.
A year or so ago, my wife Nancy gave me a Furi Tech Edge Knife Sharpening System for Christmas. Endorsed by Racheal Ray, it came in a box with parts and instructions, but ended up in the downstairs storage room where many of my gizmos go to die. Last week, however, I was rooting around on one of the shelves and saw the knife sharpening kit. Since every knife in the kitchen was as dull as a conversation with an organic chemist, I brought it upstairs, read the instructions, pulled out my dull knives and sharpened each one. They will now draw blood. They’re really sharp.
This is a neat product and it works. It is compact, easy to assemble and will sharpen even the dullest knife in seconds, not hours. If the knife has completely lost its edge, use the Tech Edge Restorer attachment. Next, pull the blade through the Diamond Sharpening Fingers to get a sharp, 20-degree edge and to keep the blade honed and in perfect shape, use the Tech Hone Fingers. Just a few swipes across with each attachment does the job.
I can’t believe I let this tool languish downstairs. From now on, it will have an honored place in my kitchen.
By the way, I’m O-Positive if you’d ever like to give a little blood.
