I got an email last week from Cheryl Seiber, a loyal reader of Cville Buzz and a fellow onion lover.
Cheryl said she had bought some Candy Onions from a local farmers market (in Michigan) and they were so sweet and juicy, she ate a whole one raw before she could slice another for a sandwich.
Candy Onions?
I had never heard of them, but they sounded tempting.
That very morning, Nancy suggested we go to the Downtown Mall to the local Farmer’s Market and check out the produce. Going to the Downtown Mall ranks right up there with getting a colonoscopy in my book. But in case of a tie, the wife wins. So, we went to the Farmer’s Market on the Downtown Mall. We were buying tomatoes and squash from a farmer from Warsaw, when I saw a table full of beautiful onions. They happened to be Candy Onions and I bought two large bunches. I asked the farmer if they were hard to grow and he said, actually, they were easy to grow with extensive root systems.
The Candy Onion is a hybrid variety that performs well in a wide range of conditions, except for the deep south and the far north areas of the country. They are sweeter than Vidalia’s and they are simply delicious.
I enjoyed them so much that I will make more (shudder) trips to the Downtown Mall, and I also intend to buy of bunch of Candy Onion sets to plant next spring.
If you see any Candy Onions, and if you love onions like Cheryl and I do, buy them.
