I am a pyromaniac. I go to their meetings.
“My name is Jim and I like to poke around in fires and watch things burn.”
If there is a campfire around, I am attracted it to it like a moth to a glowing candle. Fires, especially outdoor campfires, and fire pits are fascinating.
I drive my wife, Nancy, crazy because I can’t leave a fire alone. I am forever adding more logs and poking at the embers with a single iron prong, which is like trying to eat rice with one chopstick. Sometimes, a fiery log will come tumbling out because I did not position it correctly, and I scramble to retrieve it.
But….
For Christmas, I got the neatest gift. It’s a set of pyro gloves made by Weedabest. You can actually put on one or two of these gloves and reach right into the glowing hot flames, pick up a log, move it around and come out with all fingers still attached.
They call these gloves BBQ Gloves because they are frequently used by Pitmasters at BBQ cookoffs. The cooks grab a shoulder and flip it around with their hands, and if they need more embers in a certain spot, they pick them up and move them – and they don’t die!
Check this out.
These BBQ gloves are rated to resist temperatures up to 1472°F. That’s pretty damned hot. The gloves are made of an aramid fabric, a class of heat resistant fibers. They are used in aerospace and for military applications. I believe they are also used by NASCAR drivers in case of a fire, and they are even machine washable.
Anyway, I love them. When I now build fires in my outdoor fireplace, I have them on hand. You never know when you might get the chance to play with fire.
