I’ve been buying Sam’s Rotisserie Chicken for years. They were one of the first stores to come out with them and keep them rotating on a spit throughout the day, so you felt like they were never old and dried out. Plus, they were about five bucks, the cheapest on the market.
This past week I needed a rotisserie chicken for a quick pot pie I was making and didn’t have time to go to Sam’s. I was in Kroger’s and didn’t see any Rotisserie Chickens on display, so I asked the Deli Manager and he said they were just coming out of the oven. They are not available in Kroger’s before 11 AM so they will always be hot and fresh. They looked good and I asked how much they were. He said 2 for $10. Since I could actually use two – one for a chicken salad – I bought a couple. Good choice!
I believe the Kroger’s Rotisserie Chickens are the best for several reasons. First, they taste good. They are lightly seasoned in their “Savory” sauce, and they are cooked just right. Nice and juicy, not tough and dry. But the main reason I think they are the best is because of the package.
Sam’s uses those little plastic chicken houses that they put their rotisserie birds in, and they are fine, until you try to put them in the oven to keep the chicken warm. Then, they shrivel up into a plastic wad. But the bags that Kroger’s uses are airtight, tough, and reusable. Maybe others have come across this type of packaging, but I had not. I put part of one of the chickens in the microwave the next day, zapped it for a couple minutes and it tasted like it had just come off the rotisserie assembly line. These bags are really tough and they reseal tightly. I believe you could wash and rinse them and recycle. They are tougher by far than Ziplocs.
There are thousands of recipes and uses for rotisserie chickens, but from now on, I’ll buy mine from Kroger’s and I suppose I’ll get two while I’m at it.
