I had a Food Saver years ago. I used it often and regularly. Then, one day, the sealer no longer worked, and a Food Saver is of no use if it can’t seal packages. I went without for a while, then saw a Brand-X Food Saver that was considerably less than the real thing. I bought it and it never worked. So for maybe 10 years I have done without and relied on Zip-Locks.
Last Christmas, my daughter Angelin was asking for hints for me for Christmas – other than cigars and golf balls – and I remembered the Food Saver and dropped it as a hint.
And I got one. I don’t know how I have gotten along all those years without one.
For example, I was in Wal-Mart on a recent grocery shopping expedition and saw a huge bag of chicken leg quarters. I think it was a ten-pound bag and it was just $5. Leg quarters barbequed on the grill is one of my go-to dishes, so I bought the bag, took it home, sorted the pieces and froze them in packs of 3.
I popped one out of the freezer this week, let it defrost for a day in the refrigerator and the chicken was as fresh as the day I bought it.
It also comes in handy if you’re in Sam’s Club and they have steaks or other meats reduced. Freeze the steaks and thaw them when it’s convenient. And for fish, it’s perfect if you load up on croakers or spot. I will never go without my Food Saver again and I will never buy another imitation.
