I ran across a great product on a recent trip to Myrtle Beach to visit my brother, Charlie, and his wife Marsha.
Marsha cooked the best beef tenderloin I have ever put in my mouth. It was a USDA Prime cut – melt in your mouth tender and packed with flavor.
The day after, Charlie and I played golf and made some tenderloin sandwiches, but we needed some horseradish. Afterall, what is a roast beef sandwich without horse radish?
I went to the nearby Publix and saw a jar of Bookbinder’s Prepared Horseradish and I bought it. It was unbelievably good on those roast beef sandwiches.
This horseradish has quite a bit of kick. You can tell it was made of fresh, premium horseradish. Just a little goes a long way. It was not much more than a Kraft brand, but it was far and away better.
The company and its products date back the 1800’s and the original Bookbinder’s Restaurant in Philadelphia. The restaurant was located dockside on the Delaware River and specialized in seafood, making their own sauces, like tartar sauce, homemade mustard, and their horseradish sauce. The restaurant finally called it quits in Philly during the 2008 recession, but The Taxin family still operates the Old Original Bookbinder’s restaurant in Richmond at 2306 East Cary Street. All the great products and sauces are now made in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
I think Giant carries it you can’t find it at your favorite store, you can also buy it online or at Publix. If you like horseradish, this is the real deal.
Bookbinder’s. An historic label worth remembering.
