Recently, we had the unfortunate duty of settling and liquidating an estate of a family member. It was a long and tedious process, but with the help of family and friends and some great local businesses, it went rather smoothely. One of the businesses involved, Jefferson Coin, was truly noteworthy.
When ordinary people sell gold, silver or valuables, they really rely on the integrity of the dealer. Nancy went by Jefferson Coin to inquire about certain valuables and was most impressed. The shop gave her an estimate taking into consideration current market conditions, and offered to buy the commodities at a most impressive price. And they paid cash on the spot. We returned with more keepsakes, not really expecting great value and once again, Jefferson Coin gave us an unexpectedly high offer to help complete the estate closure.
Jefferson Coin began over 50 years ago as a small coin shop downtown. Mac Luck started the business in 1972, buying gold and silver bullions, coins, scrap gold jewelry and sterling silver. Mac recognized at once the importance of trust and credibility and quickly earned a “sterling” reputation. Unfortunately, Mac Luck passed away in 1997, never realizing how the Internet and the falling dollar would affect the small business he started in 1962 as a hobby to share with his father and his son.
Jefferson Coin Shop opened new headquarters on Route 29 North two years ago. Current owners Jim and Kara Luck as well as their three sons are now involved in the business.
As Jim and Sara state, “Our goal is to build a name across the nation as ‘America’s Local Coin Shop’. We want to establish lasting relationships with our customers, bringing them into our family business. We want you to feel like you’re right across the counter whether you’re here in Charlottesville, Virginia or surfing the web in Anchorage, Alaska. We pride ourselves on not being high pressure salesmen. We believe that the Gold and Silver sell themselves and we’re just here to help.
After our wonderful experience with Jefferson Coin, I believe the locally owned, family business is truly fulfilling its mission.
