It’s time to gobble!
The Virginia Spring Gobbler Season opened last Saturday, April 14 and runs through May 19. Hunters may harvest one bird daily and a total of three for the entire year. Only bearded birds are legal game – some hens have beards.
Turkeys may be hunted with any modern firearms, plus archery tackle and muzzleloaders. Hunters may employ decoys and blinds but it is unlawful to use dogs, electronic calls and have in possession any shot larger than #2 fine shot.
There is a split season. From April 14 through May 6, legal hunting hours are from one-half hour before sunrise until noon. From May 7 through May 19, hunters may hunt until sunset.
There should be lots of two and three year old gobblers this spring, if the weather cooperates. Hunters are expecting a good harvest for spring 2018.
