Every spring, beginning in April, striped bass by the thousands make their way from salt water up through the fresh waters of the Roanoke River for their annual spawning run. These fish migrate to the area around Weldon, NC and provide anglers with a chance at a fishing trip of a lifetime.
The stripers stay in this area throughout the month of May. The average catch will be from 20-100 per angler per day. It is an angling experience unlike any other. You need to see it to believe it.
Capt. Allen Cain of Sight-Fishing Guide Service has been hammering them.
“I’ve been on the river for a few days and the fishing is on fire. They are starting to spawn and the first two miles of river below the boat ramp is completely full of fish. Today we lost count of how many fish were caught.”
Alan noted that the energy company that runs the dam upriver has been fluctuating the river levels quite a bit lately, but as soon as the water levels out each day, the fish start crushing every fly or lure thrown to them.
“This is some of the easiest fishing you will ever do, and great for all skill levels on either fly or light tackle and it’s just an hour north of Raleigh,” he remarked.
