Marilynn Norford in Allegheny County, NC was able to capture this shot of a rare “piebald” deer. Here is her account:
“I’m excited to share this one, and yes, it was exciting to photograph because it’s such a rare sight and some people will never get to see something like this! So, yay me, (even if I haven’t got my photo of a bear), yet…….ha.
I had been hoping to get a shot like this since I first saw one (this is my 3rd sighting of a piebald) and thanks to a friend, who shared this location with me, there I was and there it was.
This is a Piebald Deer and this one is between 6-8 months old, and he/she was quite unafraid of me. I probably got as close as 20 feet away and it didn’t spook the animal at all. I probably have 50 shots at least.
And here is some interesting info about this rare sight: The piebald coloring is due to a genetic abnormality that leads to a lack of pigmentation in patches around the body. Piebaldism is a recessive trait. Both parents must carry the recessive gene for there to be a chance that they will produce a piebald fawn. It makes this condition extremely rare, affecting less than 2% of the white-tailed deer population.”
