It’s likely that below 40-degree water is gone. Every degree warm-up will encourage fish to move up from drops. Longer days will help. But what to use?
Silver Buddy lures are still the best. Try the ½ ounce silver with clearer water and sunny skies, otherwise go for the gold. The smaller ¼ ounce size will also work, but water clarity is more important. Line is also key. With the half ounce, 10-pound test Gamma Edge fluorocarbon will allow the bait to get down and allow for better hooksets. For the ¼ ounce, try downsizing line to 8-pound test to allow the bait to go to the bottom. A gentle burp of the bait along drops, starting on the shallow edge, is best. Lift and allow the bait to drop on semi slack line. Watch for bites to occur on the drop. Some bites will be subtle, so be ready for hooksets when you feel a fish.
Drag all other baits along the bottom with a slow movement and pause. Hair jigs soaked in Jack’s Juice garlic will encourage fish to hold on longer. If you can find pork chunks, use them as trailers. Pork has a lot of action and will be more realistic for fish to hold on. A slight side hookset with upward pull will set the hook. Make sure hooks are sharp. Use 10-15-pound Gamma Torque braid with 8-10-pound test Edge leaders. Use a medium to medium heavy 7’ rod for hooksets.
