We are blessed to have a number of nice golf courses in and near Charlottesville, with lots of options to tee it up. But many don’t consider a really nice course available to us just 40 miles south. Winton Farm Golf Course in Amherst. I had played it once, 5 or 6 years ago, and played it again last week.
I remember the course as being pretty long for me, so I moved up in tee boxes and played from the orange and silver and it made the round lots more fun.
Winton is a hidden gem. It’s rarely crowded and accepts VSGA cards so you can play mid-week for $32. The course was not just in good condition, it was inn outstanding shaape. The greens were a little fast, but not overly so and they were largely free of ball marks. The fairways were lush and the rough was, well, rough with thick grass.
There is one hole on the course, Number 17, I believe, that is totally unique. It is a ninety-degree angle dogleg to the left. Only a boomer like Dustin or Rory would be able to hit it over the tall trees to the green, so you have to hit it up the fairway about 120 or 130 yards, then play straight back to the left for 140 to 160, depending on where you land. It’s a fun hole and a fun course. It took us about 45 minutes to get there and we played 18 in less than four hours. Next time you are making a tee time, consider Winton.
