Everybody makes New Year’s Resolutions, usually on New Year’s Eve, but rarely kept. I make Masters resolutions, right before The Masters Golf Tournament in April. Since they didn’t have The Masters in April last year, it really screwed up my golf game. I had an awful year. Come to think of it, most of the years I play golf are awful, but I digress.
Each year, I try to make a resolution that might help lower my score a bit. Sometimes, I resolve to never leave a putt short, but after I have knocked a couple downhill putts, past the pin and into a steep green side bunker, or worse, into a lake, that resolution usually goes by the wayside. Sometimes I resolve to work on my short game, to try to get up and down in two from near the green. That works maybe once a year, twice if I’m lucky.
This year’s Masters Resolution is just to play a little smarter. Instead of trying to hit the best 8 iron I’ve ever produced and carry a trap, just hit it safe and just get on the green in two. Aim for the fat part of the fairway, get out of the sand in one shot, no matter what. So many times, a foot or two can cost 4 or 5 strokes, so play it smart, play it safe, avoid trouble and shoot for bogeys.
I’ll give this new Masters resolution about two weeks, but it’ll be fun while it lasts.
