My brother Charlie was in town over the weekend and we chose The Greens at Tanyard for a Saturday afternoon golf outing. I picked Tanyard for several reasons – it plays quickly, there’s rarely a wait, it’s a fun course and you can almost always get a tee time after 1 PM.
When we arrived, there was quite a bit of revelry out on the course, as several foursomes from a wedding party were obviously having a good time. Charlie and I had a good time, too, playing our round in about 3 ½ hours without a minute’s wait and this was on a Saturday afternoon.
The new owners at Tanyard have spent a lot of money on the course and it shows. Where the fairways were sparse and weedy last year, they are really coming around this spring. In a few more weeks, almost all the fairways will be thick. A few, in the shady spots, are still filling in.
The greens are in super shape. I have always enjoyed putting on Tanyard’s greens. If you read correctly, the ball goes where it’s supposed to go and at a reasonable speed.
Charlie had a great round with five birdies and a 77. I played poorly in the front, but broke a 100. It was not my best effort, but we had fun and I’m really impressed with the shape of the course.
I enjoy Tanyard because it is more of a shot maker’s course, with lots of doglegs. You don’t have to be a long bomber to reach par fours in two,
The traps and bunkers, also, were improved. They’re still not in the Homestead category, but much better shape than in past seasons.
This spring, make it a point to visit The Greens at Tanyard Country in Louisa. For tee times call (540) 967-1889.
