The Greens at Tanyard Golf Course in Louisa has everything I look for in a golf course. The management is friendly and accommodating. It’s an inexpensive place to play, it’s challenging and plays quickly. Best of all, it’s just a plain, fun place to play golf. Even those guys and gals who can’t hit it a country mile can play medium and short irons to the greens on most par 4’s.
Last Sunday afternoon, Greg Leffler and I managed to finagle permission from our wives to play a round and we took advantage of a 76-degree day in February to play 18 at Tanyard.
We each score fairly well, made some decent shots and completed our round in less than three hours. It cost us $26 (with our VSGA cards).
That’s what golf needs – affordable rates, fun courses and quick rounds. A round of golf when you have to wait ten minutes on each tee box before hitting is like having 18 root canals. It makes yard work look appealing, particularly if you are paying $80 or $90 a round. At Tanyard, the play is fast-paced and the price is right.
Tanyard was in excellent shape for this time of year. They did a lot of seeding and fertilizing last fall and it shows. The greens – except for a few spots – were in terrific shape and the fairways are coming along nicely. They have also re-seeded numerous tee boxes. Come spring, the course should be in terrific condition.
Tanyard is not a long course, playing at 5,757 from the white tees. Greg and I teed it up form the forward tees at 4,829, which probably contributed to our lower-than-normal scores. But who cares? We had fun. I don’t play golf to punish myself, but to get out in the fresh air with good friends and enjoy myself.
And that’s exactly what you’ll get at The Greens at Tanyard Golf Course – a fun, affordable round of golf that you can play in about three hours.
