Virginia is blessed with a four season climate and perhaps the most spectacular of all the seasons – color wise – is fall, which is right now, which is also a great time to play a little golf and take in the scenery.
In the next few weeks – as if us golfers needed more incentive to tee it up – we’ll take a look at some of the most scenic courses in Central Virginia. Right near the top of the list is Ingleside Golf Course outside of Staunton.
My frequent golfing buddy, Kevin Mann, and I played a round at Ingleside a few weeks back and on several occasions he and I had to stop playing, step back and just take in the splendor of the countryside with the Blue Ridge to the east and the Alleghenies to the west. With the greens and fairways in a rich emerald green, it was quite a contrast on colors and it’s going to get better.
If you’ve never played Ingleside, you’re missing both beauty and a challenge.
Ingleside is anything but flat. There are hills on every hole. The first time I played there, I let the course beat me up and didn’t score well. But the last time I played, I tried to stay within my limits and shot an 83 – my best round of the year. Kevin had his usual strong round with a 78.
Ingleside is not a long course; only 6.400 from the back tees, but the steep hills add length and challenge to your iron play. The greens were in decent shape, though a few had suffered over the summer.
Fall rates are in place now at $30 with a cart from Monday through Friday and just $35 on Saturdays and Sundays. Ingleside Golf Course is located at 1410 Commerce Road in Staunton. Call 540-248-7888 for more information.
It’s a beautiful course, especially in the fall. See you there!
