Weather permitting, we are playing golf again every Wednesday, my day off. Last week, we chose my favorite course, Heritage Oaks in Harrisonburg. Heritage Oaks is owned and operated by the City of Harrisonburg. Lots of municipal courses are grossly mis-managed as are many government-run projects. But not Heritage Oaks. For starters, it is a most friendly and welcoming course. After you play a round, they e-mail and say thanks for visiting. Others don’t. It is also a most reasonably priced course. With the VSGA Card, 18-holes with. Cart was just $30. They also have a marshal out and about, not just on weekends, but always. Most courses no longer use marshals, and that means if there is a four-some ahead of you staring down every putt like it’s the 18th hole on Sunday at Augusta National, the round drags on and on. A marshal keeps play going and makes the slow groups skip a hole or two or let others play through.,
The course is always in tip-top shape. The tee boxes were large and well kept, the fairways were perfect and the greens were in great shape for an August after a summer of extreme heat, then extreme rain.
This is an easy course, but not a pushover. It’s not a terrible long course, which allows average golfers to use a medium iron to the green on a par four. I didn’t play very well, but I had a great time. We’ll be back again soon.
