Greg Leffler, my regular golfing buddy, and I figured we could sneak out for a few hours and get in a round of golf last Sunday afternoon. We wanted a fun course and one that would be uncrowded, so we could get in 18 holes and get back home in time to keep the wives happy. One course quickly came to mind – The Greens at Tanyard Golf Club.
Tanyard is one of my favorite places to play. It’s not a long course, but one that places an emphasis on shot making. I wish all golf courses were that way instead of rewarding only the bombers among us. It’s nice whan an average golfer can hit a short iron to a green after a decent drive on a par four. Tanyard is like that – from the forward tees. But if you play from the back tees, it’s a completely different course.
Tanyard always plays quickly. The members pride themselves in getting in a round under 4 hours. Greg and I played the course without rushing in 3 hours and 45 minutes. And we practically had the course to ourselves. After 1 PM, it’s usually wide open. Most golfers, these days, play early or not at all.
Lisa Jomes, owner at Tanyard, has plowed lots of money into the course itself. She is reseeding several fairwauys. The greens were in excellent shape, considering our drought-like conditiopns, and she is building several new tee boxes.
Tanyard accepts the VSCGA card, so it only cost $30 for 18 holes on a Sunday with a cart. Reasonable, fun, quick, scenic? What else could you aks for in a golf course?
