A group of us went out to eat last Saturday and decided on the Timberwood Tap Room near Wegman’s in the Fifth Street Station Shopping Center. I has eaten at Timberwood Grill near Forest Lakes, but not across town.
Scanning the menu, I decided on a sandwich rather than a heavy entrée. All the sandwiches at Timberwood Grill have been good, and the menus looked much the same. So I went for a Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich and we all decided to share some appetizers. They were amazing. We had Calamari and it was as good as it gets. The finest restaurants in Nags Head can do no better. It was delicately fried, nice and crispy and it was tender and just plain delicious. I could probably have done with that and a salad and been fine, but we also ordered General Tso’s Cauliflower.
A waiter at Timberwood Grill had recommended that dish before, but I went for something sexier. Afterall, who wants cauliflower as an appetizer? From now on, I will. It was tempura battered and incredible. I think they steamed the cauliflower first, so it was still a little crunchy, but not hard as a rock. The General Tso’s Sauce was scrumptious, made in house I understand.
I would recommend the Timberwood Tap Room on the strength of their appetizers alone, but the Philly Cheese Steak was also delicious, not overpowered by either cheese or peppers, just the right amount and piled high with tender beef.
I believe that when it comes to sandwiches, and this would include burgers, Timberwood is where it’s at. I have had their Reubens – spot on, and their Hercules, a French Dip that is also first rate.
Next time you’re in the mood for a great sandwich and some delicious appetizers, for starters, check out Timberwood. The address at Fifth Street Station is 245 Merchant Walk. They close each evening at 11. For directions and a menu, go to timberwoodtaphouse.com
