Mineral, Virginia may be one of the least likely places you’d expect to find a fine eating establishment, but according to Sherman Shifflett, Tavern on the Rail, located about ten miles northeast of Mineral and not far from the power plant, is a nuclear option for dining out.
Says Sherman, “Last Saturday afternoon, Ava and I and another couple had dinner at Tavern on the Rail in rural Louisa County. It’s located in a store beside the old C&O railroad tracks in the Frederick’s Hall community. I had the fried seafood platter and it was outstanding. It comes with two sides and I ordered baked potato and Cole slaw.”
“Last summer we invited a couple from Earlysville and he said it would be nice going to an out-of-the-way place and to not know anyone. But the first person he saw was a fellow he knew from Charlottesville.”
Owners Melody and Kenny Bowers restored the 1837 building, a Nationally Registered Historic Landmark. The upstairs offers elegant yet relaxed dining. The downstairs is welcoming and cozy for casual dining or a quick bite. Reservations are recommended for Friday and Saturday nights.
According to many, this unique and special dining establishment offers superb food.
Here’s what one satisfied patron had to say.
“This was my first time here and I cannot wait to come back. The service is outstanding. The owner is very friendly and answered all question. My meal was amazing – Grilled Shrimp Skewers, mashed potatoes and broccoli. It was cooked perfectly.”
Said another happy customer:
“What an unexpected surprise. The exterior of the building does the restaurant a disservice, as it appears that you are entering some sort of old-timey general store. The inside is cozy and pub-like. The food was exceptional and decently priced. We had the prime rib which was perfect and good portions as well. That was our first time and we will definitely be back.
