Dinner at Wawa? A gas station? With week-old hot dogs spinning on the counter display?
No, dinner at Wawa with some of the best hand cut sandwiches in town.
I didn’t know much about Wawa, except they had a weird name. I figured the first born of one of the owners cried, “wah-wah” and they used that name instead of Shell or Amoco. But when Wawa came to town a few months ago, they certainly put their stamp on the gas market. Whereas Sheetz was listing their gas at whatever-the-market-would bear prices, Wawa opened at about 20-cents less per gallon and Sheetz and the other gougers quickly adjusted their prices, though still not as low as Wawa. I admired Wawa right off the bat.
Then, a friend said they had some of the best subs and sandwiches anywhere, that they used Boar’s Head quality meats, fresh baked breads, and all at great prices.
So, one evening when Nancy and I might have ordered a pizza, we drove out to the new Wawa at Forest Lakes and ordered a couple sandwiches. I was super impressed at the selection of cheeses, veggies, and spreads to custom build a sandwich – and the speed at which their servers worked. We were in and out in less than 10 minutes and my Philly Cheese Steak was spot on.
Wawa may also be the Panini King in Charlottesville. You can create your own Paninis, even breakfast Paninis like the Chipotle Bacon and Egg or try a Cheesy Turkey Bacon and Egg. They offer all kinds of Hoagies, Salads, Soups, Burgers, Pasta. Kids’ Meals and …ta-da … Ice Cream, their own private brand, hand-dipped, rich, and creamy!!
Wawa has been around quite a bit, starting off as an iron foundry in 1803. Around the turn of the last century, they went in the dairy busines, then opened their first food and convenience store in 1964. They have been super successful with close to 800 stores along the East Coast. And they are convenient. Wawa serves great food from 5 in the morning until 11 at night, which covers just about everybody but Uber drivers.
If you haven’t already, the next time you “fill’er up”, pick up a sandwich or meal at Wawa. You will not be disappointed.
