There is a number of great places to get a hamburger in Charlottesville, but one of the best (and often overlooked) spots is Martin’s Grill at Forest Lakes. They are known for their hamburgers and they have them all the way from a single burger to a Quadzilla with 4 patties, and all cooked on a stove top grill.
My understanding is that Ryan Martin, the founder of Martin’s grill, once worked for Riverside in the original location at Free Bridge beside the Rivanna River. Ryan suggested that Riverside expand and open another restaurant on 29 North, but the owner of Riverside didn’t act. So Ryan opened Martin’s Grill in 2004, and they have been serving up great burgers and grill food ever since. Though Martin’s is known for their burgers made from 100% ground chuck, they actually have an extensive menu including Wings, Salads, Beer Battered Onion Rings (a specialty), great French Fries, Brisket Sandwiches, Dogs, Italian Combos, BBQ, Shrimp Po’Boys, Tom Reubens (with turkey), Clubs, Philly Steak and Grilled Cheese.
The restaurant is clean, neat, comfortable and the service is quick and efficient for in-and-out lunches. Martin’s also does take-out and catering. The address is 3449 Seminole Trail (in front of Food lion at Forest Lakes). Restaurant hours are from 11 AM till 9 PM. Their phone number is 434-974-9955.
Next time you’re thinking about a good burger (or any number of other great sandwiches), give Martin’s Grill a try. You won’t be disappointed.
