Lumpkin’s Family Restaurant.
It’s where the folks in Scottsville gather. Downhome cooking, friendly service and the best breakfast this side of Tip Top in Charlottesville.
If you’ve ever passed through the little river city of Scottsville, you’ve seen that huge rooster out in Lumpkin’s parking lot. Inside, the food is superb.
Years ago, I fished in some bass tournaments and we often found ourselves passing through Scottsville in the early morning hours – and we always stopped at Lumpkin’s for breakfast and generally ordered sandwiches for lunch to go.
Lumpkin’s is one of the least pretentious places in the world. It’s a family restaurant in the truest sense – a reflection of the past when folks gathered to eat, sip a little coffee and catch up with their neighbors. It’s good, old fashioned comfort food. Everybody in Scottsville eats at Lumpkin’s, and outsiders, too.
For breakfast you’ll get fresh hen eggs just like you want them cooked, piping hot coffee, homemade biscuits and perfectly fried bacon, sausage or country ham with grits if you’d like. Pancakes and waffles, too.
The Chicken Salad served for lunch sandwiches is five-star stuff and the Fried Chicken is very good. Also try their Chicken Fried Steak with Mashed Potatoes and Gravy.
I’ve heard their desserts are delicious, but I’ve never had had enough room left in my belly to try them. Too full.
The prices are very reasonable, with many entrees under ten bucks, but don’t flash them a credit card. They only take cash and checks.
The address is 1075 Valley Street. They don’t take reservations, but for take-out orders, call 434-286-3690.
The restaurant is closed on Wednesday’s and Sunday’s, but opens at 7 AM the other days of the week.
I really miss breakfast at Lumpkin’s. Guess I need to fish in some more tournaments.
