Years ago I was headed for the Northern Neck where I would meet a charter boat captain at Lewisetta and try my hand at catching Spanish mackerel. After asking advice on directions, a friend advised me that when I passed through Tappahannock – if I had a chance – to eat at a place called Lowery’s Seafood Restaurant. It so happened that I was in the small town around dinnertime, and pulled into a full parking lot at Lowery’s. I ordered a seafood platter and since that time, whenever I pass through Tappahannock, I make it a point to stop at Lowery’s. A frequent contributor to Cville Buzz, Sherman Shifflett, enjoys the restaurant so much that he takes Ava there (a two hour drive) for lunch on her birthday. Sherman knows the Lowery family and went to Ferrum College with two of the sons of the original founders, Leslie and Lorelle Hutchinson Lowery. After 75 years, Lowery’s is still a family-owned and operated business serving some of the finest, freshest seafood in the Commonwealth. Founded in 1938, Lowery’s has been renovated numerous times including a recent remodel in 2016. The new Captain’s Grill and Patio addition allows customers to sit outside and enjoy food, drinks and live music. Lowery’s offer fresh, local seafood, plus their specialties – All American Fried Chicken, Homemade House Dressing, Homemade Bread Pudding and Spoon Bread. Sherman says he adores the Spoon Bread as well as the Rice Pudding with Raisins. I love their seafood. Period. It is first rate.
