I’m jealous.
My friend, Sherman Shifflett sent me an email last week saying that since it was Ava’s birthday, he took his special lady clear down to Tappahannock to Lowery’s Seafood Restaurant to celebrate. Sherman lives in Louisa, so that’s a pretty long haul for a meal, but if you get the “hungries” for seafood, it’s hard to beat Lowery’s.
On my way to a fishing trip on the Northern Neck about 25 years ago, a friend suggested that if I passed through Tappahannock at dinnertime, stop at Lowery’s. He said the seafood was superb, and was it ever. Since then, I never miss an opportunity to eat at Lowery’s whenever I am anywhere nearby.
Lowery’s is one of a dying breed – a family owned restaurant. Founded in 1938 by Wesley and Lorelle Hutchinson, the restaurant has been remodeled and refurbished throughout the years and now sports a special Captain’s Patio for outdoor food and entertainment.
Ava and Sherman had quail and frog legs, among other items, but I go strictly with the Fried Seafood Platter, piled high with fresh flounder, shrimp, crab cakes and scallops. If soft crabs are in season, and on the menu, I order them and they are superb! Makes me want to hop in the car and try to be there by dinnertime tonight. It is really, really good seafood.
Lowery’s is open seven days a week, 364 days a year – sorry, no seafood for you on Christmas. They have daily lunch and dinner specials featuring Local, Fresh Seafood, their own All American Fried Chicken, Homemade House Dressing, Homemade Bread Pudding, Spoon Bread and much more.
If your travels this summer and fall take you to Tappahannock, don’t miss at an opportunity to eat at one of the premiere seafood restaurants in all of Virginia. Stop by Lowery’s Seafood Restaurant. You won’t regret it.
