The official results of the Virginia BBQ Restaurant contest sponsored by Virginia Living Magazine should be available soon, but in the meantime, there’s a pretty good “Q” restaurant not too far from Charlottesville. It’s the Log Cabin BBQ restaurant located between Elkton and Harrisonburg on Rt. 33, near the entrance to Massanutten. The name Log Cabin is appropriate because it is a log cabin.
The restaurant opened 20 years ago, quickly became established as the best BBQ in the Valley and stays busy. Log Cabin now has outside dining with a spectacular view of the Blue Ridge. You can also order BBQ to go by the sandwich or by the pound.
Log Cabin does three types of BBQ – Eastern NC style (my favorite), their original BBQ with a sweet tomato sauce (not my favorite) and Beef BBQ with a sweet tomato sauce.
The ribs, baked beans, Mac ‘n Cheese and hush puppies have all received honors.
Unquestionably, North Carolina has the best barbeque in the country, – make that the world – but the Eastern NC recipe served at Log Cabin deserves kudos. Try it. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
The restaurant is closed on Tuesday’s, but is open 11 AM till 9 PM on most days of the week, The address is 11672 Spotswood Trail, Elkton. Call ahead orders may be made at 540-289-9400.
