We had a family reunion last weekend in Clemmons, NC, near Winston Salem. Lexington BBQ catered. We ordered a meal for 60 and had enough to feed 100. All I can say is wow!
Lexington is small to medium size town tucked away in North Carolina’s piedmont section. It’s not close to anything but it’s not terribly far from High Point, Greensboro, and Winston. Not a single soul in that entire area is unaware of Lexington BBQ. It’s the standard bearer for classic western style Carolina BBQ.
The Tarheel State is deeply divided over which style BBQ is best. The folks in Raleigh and Greenville think the mere mention of Western Style BBQ is fighting words, whereas in Statesville, Winston and Rocky Mount, western style BBQ is the only way to go.
They are both delicious in my opinion.
The eastern-style N.C. barbecue is known for its vinegar base and peppery bite. It’s lighter and spicier than its western counterpart. Western style, often called “Lexington style” barbecue, has a rich, slightly sweeter sauce typically made with butter, sugar, and ketchup in addition to vinegar and spices.
Lexington BBQ has been around for years. They dominate the market because they use quality pork, they cook it right, the prices are reasonable, and their sauce is super good.
Most of my readers are in Virginia, but if your travels take you down I-85 or I-40, pop off the main highway and track down Lexington BBQ. The restaurant is located at
100 Smokehouse Lane in Lexington.
Order a platter of chopped BBQ with their red slaw, a stack of hush puppies, a side of green beans, and a big scoop of mac and cheese. You will leave full and most eager to return
