Summertime and ice cream. A perfect combination. On a hot night after dinner, there’s nothing like putting out a couple scoops from a Breyer’s carton of Rocky Road Ice Cream in a bowl, but for an extra special treat, it’s hard to beat a trip to an ice cream parlor – a place like Kirt’s Homemade Ice Cream.
These folks do it right and they’ve been doing it right for some 20 years. This out of the way, Mom-and-Pop shop in Albemarle Square near ACAC on 29 North is owned and operated by Kirt and Ivy Gray. They bring in amazing flavors such as Carpe Donuts, Banana Pudding, Egg Nog, Pumpkin Spice, Raspberry Cheesecake, Red Velvet – over 30 unique flavors in all.
My wife Nancy was super impressed with their ice cream sandwiches, unlike any she’d ever tasted.
They also do scrumptious, homemade Ice Cream Cakes, always a hit at birthday parties.
The shop has a vintage décor, an inviting place to wait to place your order, and you usually have to wait. Many others in C’ville have also become addicted to that unique homemade taste with rich creams brought in from Lancaster, PA.
The prices aren’t cheap, but they are well worth it. A small cone will set you back $4.75. A 2-scoop cone is $5.95 and three scoops cost you $6.75. They also offer floats and shakes – and ice cream sammies!
Kirt’s is now offering home delivery if you can’t make it to their place and they cater! What a treat for a kid’s birthday party.
If somehow you have avoided stopping by Kirt and Ivy’s shop at 622 Albemarle Square, you simply must pay them a visit. Incredible ice cream, great atmosphere, delightful owners. How can you beat that? Especially on a warm summer night. They are open till 8 PM. Stop by soon and get some ice cream you can feel good about.
