I was really craving a fat Italian Sausage sandwich loaded with spicy sausage, hot peppers, mushrooms and onions. Afterall, I haven’t had a severe case of heartburn in more than a month, but I made the mistake of asking Nancy what she wanted if we went out.
“Mexican”, she said. “Guadalajara”, she said, but I’m not so sure that it was the Margaritas she was more interested in than the food. Guadalajara does make the best in town.
So, we went to Guadalajara on Greenbrier Drive, the site of the old Barnaby’s Pizza restaurant. What a great restaurant that was!
Scanning the huge menu I think I ordered the “Chicacomangarito” or something like that. Nancy got a “Tamalefajitamama” or something like that. I was never very good at ordering Mexican. Whatever it was, it was good. We both ate until we were about to pop. I believe our entrees were about $10/$11 each. We spent more on the drinks, but we had a great meal and certainly got our money’s worth.
Guadalajara is a Charlottesville Institution, serving the community great Mexican cuisine since 1988. The locally and family owned business now has four locations offering family casual dining, plus carry-out and delivery. The menu actually includes Fajitas, Homemade Tamales, Enchiladas, Tacos, Nachos, Burritos, Chimichangas, and Quesadillas. I know all this because I looked it up. I do know what a Taco looks like. The rest – I’m not so sure about.
But I know what I like and I always enjoy eating at Guadalajara. The restaurant is clean and neat with colorful Mexican décor inside and out. The service is quick and efficient.
Check them out at one of their four locations: Downtown on Market St., Pantops, Greenbrier Drive and near UVA on Fontaine Avenue.
