I always thought of Fried Pickles as “Fair Food” – like Elephant Ears and Corn Dogs. But more and more, restaurants are adding these delicious appetizers to their menus.
Nancy and I made a last minute decision to eat out last night, and chose “The Loud Place” – Texas Roadhouse. And it was loud – at least three birthdays and lots of “Ya-hoos.”
I saw the Fried Pickles as an appetizer and ordered a tray. They were super good, but way more than I needed. Nancy ate a few and liked them, but I almost finished off the entire platter, enough for four.
Texas Roadhouse uses dill pickle slices, while others use pickle spears. I had some that way at Log Cabin BBQ near Massanutten. There is also a new restaurant outside Lake Monticello called Danny’s Bar and Grill and one of their specialties is Fried Pickles – second to none, or so they say.
Fried Pickles is a southern creation, originating at the Duchess Drive-In in Atkins, Arkansas. They are usually served as an appetizer, but could easily be a side with a burger or a hot dog. I think next time, instead of French Fries, I might order Fried Pickle with my burger. Some people call Fried Pickles, “Frickles”. I call them good. Next time you’re at The Texas Roadhouse, try an order. Also, their Rib-Eye Steaks are second to none. Period.
