Unlike the French and Italians, the British aren’t known for their culinary skills. When Kidney Pie is one of your top dishes, you know you’re in trouble. But one thing the Brits do well, and are famous for, is Fish and Chips. Fish and Chips was a blue-collar staple for the English working men. They used white fish caught in trawlers in the North Sea, then fried the fish, served them with potatoes as a take-out, or “takeaway meal as they say.
When cooked properly, Fish and Chips is one of our favorite meals when “Eatin’ Out.”
Last night, I had a hankering for Fish and Chips so Nancy and I flipped a coin to pick the restaurant. It was either Rhett’s; they have outstanding Fish and Chips, or The Bonefish Grill. We decided on Bonefish because we like to sit at the bar and eat. The bartender there is first rate and we never have to wait for drinks or service and you don’t need reservations.
My Fish and Chips order was perfect. The long strips of cod were lightly breaded, yet crisp and succulent. With a little malt vinegar and the homemade tartar sauce, it was a meal fit for kings, yet, it only cost about $15. It’s nice to go out and get an entrée for $15 and enjoy every morsel.
They have many good entrees at Bonefish Grill, but if you’ve never tried their Fish and Chips, give it a go, mate.
