When guests came from out of town, there are any number of great restaurants in Charlottesville you could suggest. But is there one signature dish in all of Mr. Jefferson’s fine town that stands out? One single dish? Not that I’m aware of. There is lots of great food, but no signature dish that you would “have to try” when in Charlottesville.
I enjoy watching the Travel Channel as they focus on signature dishes in specific towns. Like if you are ever in Lexington, NC, you absolutely have to stop by for some ‘Que at Lexington Barbeque, or if in Atlanta, you’ve wasted a trip unless you eat a hot dog at The Varsity. How about Geno’s for a cheesesteak in Philly or a New York Strip at Gallagher’s Steak House in NYC? In Memphis, it’s Barbeque Ribs from Central BBQ. In Dallas, you’d have to order Gulf Fried Shrimp from Pappadeaux’s. If in Morehead City, NC, I would send you to the Sanitary Fish Market for a Seafood Platter.
Maybe it’s because we have lots of good choices here in Charlottesville that nothing comes to mind, or maybe we just don’t have that one dish that really stands out.
What are your thoughts? Is there one dish at any one restaurant that you would insist that folks try if they visited Charlottesville?
