Wegman’s is a grocery store, not a restaurant. Isn’t it? Actually, Wegman’s is a grocery store with a restaurant inside. Nancy and I were in that area of town last Sunday and stopped by to check out the new store (it was my first visit) and since it was lunchtime, we went to their restaurant and ordered food and drinks.
Wegman’s Food Markets, Inc. is a privately held American supermarket chain headquartered in Gates, New York. The chain currently has over 90 stores in in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Virginia. As best I know, they all have restaurants.
The restaurant in Charlottesville’s Wegman’s looks like it was air lifted from the lobby of a New York hotel – very ornate. They have mostly bar food – sandwiches, wrap’ soups, burgers and the like, but they have a fully stocked bar. Nancy ordered a Bloody Mary that was about 50% Tabasco and I had a beer. I was a little disappointed that the beer was cool, not cold, and the glass they brought was not chilled. But I was thirsty and it didn’t go to waste.
I ordered a cheeseburger and some Tuscan Fries – both were excellent and reasonably priced.
The bad part about eating at Wegman’s is they put the calories right beside each entrée and that takes the fun out of eating. Did you know an order of Hot Wings has over 1,100 calories? Nancy was going to order those, but changed her mind when she saw the caloric content. Sticker shock, you know. Can’t the Food Nazi’s let us eat in peace?
As I wandered through the grocery store (it is huge), I noted that Wegman’s has good prices, but not great prices. I thought their meat and seafood section was a little weak, considering they have about a million square feet. It would take a shopper a half-day to weave up and down each aisle. But maybe that’s why they have a well stocked bar in their restaurant.
Would I eat there again? Sure.
But this time I’d order a COLD beer.
