We went out to eat recently with my daughter, Laura, and her friend Rene. They asked us to join them at a Korean restaurant on the Downtown Mall. I’m not crazy about going to the Downtown Mall, but I had heard that this restaurant, DOMA Korean Kitchen, was very good, so we gave it a try.
It is very good.
I enjoy good Chinese food. Korean is similar, but different in many regards. For starters, the portions in Chinese cuisine are usually family style and very large. Korean food is served in smaller, more personal size portions. Korean food is done with more grilling, while the Chinese tend to roast things. Korean food is a little more spicey, but not overly so. They use lots of chili pepper, garlic, and onions. The foods are very tasty.
We ordered the three course, $29 plates, which included a salad, a main dish, and a dessert.
I ordered the DOMA House Salad – fresh and delightful. Nancy had their Fried Wings, and they were delicious. For an entrée, I ordered beef BBQ and Nancy chose the Short Ribs. Both were excellent.
Korean BBQ means grilled, not barbequed in the American sense. It was stir-fried and delicious, as were Nancy’s Short Ribs. The girls ordered some sort of Tufu dish. I tasted it and it was pretty good. For dessert, the Apple Pie is as good as it gets. Unbelievable, with a scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream.
The pie alone is worth a visit.
DOMA is a small restaurant, maybe 15 or 16 tables inside. They have outside seating on the Mall, when weather allows. The restaurant is almost always packed, so reservations (except for lunch) are necessary.
The address is 701 E. Main St. right across from The Nook. Contact them at domakoreankitchen.com or (434) 202-1956.
