About 20 years ago, I was on a fishing trip to the Mattaponi River in West Point. The croakers were running and it was time to stock the freezer. There were four of us and our driver pulled into a seafood market when we arrived at West Point. I figured we would be buying bait, and we did, but we were also buying our lunch as it turns out,
“Ever eaten Deviled Crabs from Diggs?” someone asked.
I had never been to Diggs before, didn’t know it existed and I admitted that I had not tried their crabs. To tell the truth, I was never a big fan of Deviled Crabs until I tasted these. Holy Moly, were they good! We each had several deviled crabs for lunch on the boat and when we finished fishing, I insisted that we stop by Diggs again and take some home.
Way back when, Diggs was located just across the bridge heading east in downtown West Point. Road construction moved the local seafood eatery a few miles east to what is called Mattaponi, but still on Rt. 33 (Lewis B. Puller Memorial Highway). Rarely do I ever travel through West Point that I don’t stop and buy Deviled Crabs from Diggs. Their Crab Muffins are also extra good.
Diggs buys their crabs and seafood solely from local fishermen. They make their dishes fresh, daily. This is more of a take-out restaurant than eat in, but tables are available.
If you EVER go through West Point, stop at Diggs Seafood Market.
The address is 6570 Lewis B Puller Memorial Hwy. in Mattaponi. Call ahead to reserve your order (they often run out later in the day) at (804) 785-2400.
