Coming back from Urbanna and the Oyster Festival last Monday, we passed by Diggs Seafood in West Point and didn’t stop. Nancy and I had to get back to work and were pressed for time and it broke my heart.
I have an unwritten rule: If I ever pass through West Point, I simply must stop and pick up some Deviled Crabs to see if they were as delectable as I remember and they always are.
Diggs Seafood, which used to be in the heart of West Point, moved down the road a couple miles out of town on Rt. 33 in a strip mall.
I first stopped at Diggs about 20 years ago on a croaker fishing trip with friends, They went into Diggs to buy lunch and I followed along.
“Try their Deviled Crabs,” someone said. I did and ate them before we got on the boat, then I insisted we stop back before the trip home and get more.
Their Crab Muffins are also to die for. The Crab Muffins consist of a heaping spoonful of crab meat with in-house seasoning and toasted on an English Muffin with a thick topping of cheese. Holy Cow! It don’t get no better.
And talk about fresh? The Deviled Crabs you eat for lunch were likely brought in that morning.
The address of Diggs Seafood is 6570 Lewis B. Puller HWY. in Mattaponi, but it’s really a little east of West Point off Rt. 33.
If your travels take you through West Point, by all means stop at Diggs.
