I feel sorry for the Dairy Queen restaurant at Forest Lakes here in Charlottesville. It’s tucked away, seemingly back in the woods, over behind McDonalds, and is hardly visible from the road. Plus, our business-hating county refuses to let DQ have even a modest sign on the highway so people will know it’s there. But we know it’s there, and every now and then when Nancy gets a hankering for a DQ milkshake, if I’m the least bit hungry, I’ll order a hot dog. Got one last Sunday. Damn, it was good.
I’m not aware of any restaurant in Charlottesville that has a better hot dog than Dairy Queen. Well, maybe Jack ‘N Jill, but that’s it.
I don’t know what makes their hot dogs so good, but they use large steamed buns, big enough to hold lots of great chili, sweet onions and a fat wiener. Add a stream or two of mustard and it’s the real deal.
Nancy’s shake was good, as usual, but my hot dog was out of sight. Next time you pass by Dairy Queen on 29 North, pull in and order a really good hot dog.
