How many Chinese or Oriental restaurants do we have in Charlottesville? A thousand? No, not quite that many, but sometimes it seems that way. There is certainly one in every strip mall in town, and most I’ve tried are pretty good.
Our favorite Chinese Restaurant used to be the Flaming Wok. I knew the owner and always enjoyed his food and service, but pending development shut down his restaurant on Seminole Trail. Supposedly a hotel was coming and they were going to level the entire tract, but I think that deal fell through. The property is now for lease.
Nancy, my wife, loves Chopstix, a small restaurant practically next door to her Nancy B’s lighting showroom. She and her comrades frequently order takeout there for lunches and she raves about the portions and low prices. They are huge – so big, she often brings home a doggie bag just from lunch leftovers.
Since Chopstix is within a few blocks of our house, when we order take-out Chinese these days, we call them and we have never been disappointed.
Chopstix carries all the typical Chinese entrees and they are very reasonably priced. It is definitely a take-out eatery. They have a small table inside, but I’ve never seen anybody eating there. Their order times are usually 10 or 15 minutes, no matter what you get. I don’t know how they do it – they just keep stuff ready all the time, I suppose.
The “experts” say that Chopstix is the closest to a New York Chinese restaurant that we have here in town. I know one thing: their WonTon Soup and their Tempura style chicken wings are extra special. Sometimes I’ll get the munchies just for their wings and pick up a small order, and it’s always ready in ten or fifteen minutes. I have found their food and service to be consistently good and their prices most reasonable. Their kitchen is neat and clean and the food is always hot and tasty. They deliver, but we always do pick-up because we are so close.
Chopstix is located in the Woodbrook Shopping Center on Rt. 29 North. The address is 1841 Seminole Traill and their phone number is (434) 975-4380. Visit their website at chopsticksexpress29.com if you’d like to check out their menu.
Try them sometime – and be sure to get an order of their wings.
