I had not eaten at Burton’s Grill & Bar. Friends advised that it was good, but expensive. They were right. The food was delicious, but their prices were at the very top of Charlottesville’s food chain.
We met friends there last Saturday night and the place was packed – a good sign. The service was a bit slow, but to be expected on a busy night. I ordered a Maker’s Mark and Ginger Ale, didn’t ask the price, but it was $12. I also ordered a Special as an appetizer – Scallops with a Cream and Scallion Sauce. It was scrumptious, but again, I didn’t ask the price and it came in at a robust $22 for four scallops. I would have never ordered an appetizer for $22 had I known, but it was really good. For an entrée, I ordered crab cakes and they were top notch, little if any filler and cooked spot on. They also had an in-house cole slaw that was extremely good.
My tablemates all ordered pasta dishes and they all said they were good.
Our tab at the end of the meal was staggering, but I’ve always said I would rather pay more for a very good diner, than less and get a so-so meal. I certainly got what I asked for.
All restaurants are being forced to raise their prices. Food is up, labor is up, and I suppose we should get used to higher prices if we choose to dine out. But Burton’s is right up there with Ivy Inn and Clifton in pricing, and that’s stiff competition.
Burton’s Grill – delicious, but expensive.
