I stopped by Harris Teeter last week to pick up a melon and as I passed by the seafood section, I saw that they had Red Argentine Shrimp, so I quickly bought a pound and a half.
I first ran into these delicious prawns a couple years back – also at Harris Teeter. These, I believe, are the best tasting shrimp on the planet. They taste an awful lot like lobster, but not as strong, They also have a lobster-like texture. They are delicious and they were on sale – less expensive than the regular shrimp.
Unlike other shrimp, they are red when you buy them, not just after they are boiled or cooked.
I believe that most shrimp you find in stores these days have been farm-raised, which is okay, but these Argentine Shrimp are caught in the icy cold waters off the coast of Argentina, with a sweet taste of the sea. As with most wild prawn species, their distinct flavors originate from their natural ocean habitats. No farm pens, no artificial feeding, no antibiotics and no genetic modification, just natural goodness. They are tender and cook in just a jiffy – either steamed or grilled. They are sweet, buttery and succulent. Harris Teeter does not always have them in stock but they did last week. Hurry down and buy some.
