Some of the best places to stay at Smith Mountain Lake are the homes and condos on the Airbnb site. I saw dozens and dozens of wonderful places at very attractive rates, but I was making reservations just a few days before our trip and would be arriving after business hours, so I decided to go through a real estate management company where I could ask questions, get directions and information and check in at a later hour.
The first 4 or 5 places I called went into voice mail. I began to panic. Finally, I called the kind folks at RSI Rentals, Inc. and talked with a friendly lady named Dawn. She was a pro, helped me choose a place and arranged to leave the rental package secured in a box on the porch.
We chose a one-bedroom condo in Striper’s Landing called Reel Simple,
Staying in a one-bedroom condo was a little like being in a cabin on a cruise ship. There wasn’t a lot of room. I’ve been in master closets larger than this, but it was just the two of us and we made do.
There was a queen size bed in the front of the unit with the kitchen and bath in the middle and a living/dining area in the back with a wonderful lake view. There was also a private balcony, but it was too cold and rainy to enjoy.
Striper’s Landing has a huge pool and lots of boat slips plus a boat ramp if you have a boat to launch. There is pier complex and I tried my luck fishing there and caught three…. leaves. The lake was extremely muddy, and the water was still cold.
Striper’s Landing also has two- and three-bedroom units. Our room was recently remodeled with brand new appliances and furniture. We would rent there again if we just had a few days. If we had another couple or two to join us, we would go for one of the many larger condos on the lake.
Go on line and poke around for a place. There are many from which to choose. If you need a real live human being to talk to, call RSI Rentals at 540-721-9797 (rsirentals.com).
